The Character Lab: Creative Play and Scientific Principles.

Children participated in a play lab where they designed and made a character from a variety of materials. They drew a diagram of their character on a special score card, which they then took with their character and card to the testing area.

They watched as the character was tested for its ability to float, fly and stick. They were given scores for each of these areas and input into their card. LED lights added fun and excitement to their characters.

The Character Lab utilises haptic learning methods alongside a fun play acting scenario, and encourages creative problem solving as well as a thoughtful response to the science and art curriculum.

The Lab is part of an ongoing research project which looks into character-led creativity and narrative play in children’s learning,  set up by Desdemona McCannon in 2006 at Glyndwr University.
